Description
Long considered as an industrial city without charm, Mulhouse has become since the beginning of the 21st century a metropolis whose living environment, architecture and cultural life are able to compete with many major more famous cities.
From its past as a free city, so jealous of its independence that it agreed to join France only during the French Revolution, the city keeps, in the shade of the famous “Tour de l'Europe”, many old buildings, of which the most famous is undoubtedly the old City Hall, built in the Renaissance and that Montaigne has called «magnificent palace and all gold». Beside it, the Saint-Étienne temple preserves an exceptional set of stained glass windows from the 14th century. In the streets of the old city, you will discover the mansions of the rich draper of the 18th century, and meet some well-known personalities native from Mulhouse, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Alfred Dreyfus. On some houses, you will discover a centuries-old tradition still alive that is the pride of Mulhouse: painted walls.
